NYC CryptoCurrency Convention

On April 9, 2014, Marscoin made its major public debut at the CryptoCurrency Convention in New York City. The event provided a platform to introduce the broader crypto community to Marscoin’s unique mission: bridging the gap between decentralized finance and the ambitious goal of human settlement on Mars.

A Vision for Interplanetary Finance

During a dedicated session talk, Marscoin founder Lennart Lopin presented the core thesis of the project. He outlined how a cryptocurrency could serve as the first financial model for the Red Planet, assuming that early settlers would bring a copy of the blockchain with them.

The presentation highlighted how Marscoin’s underlying technology could overcome the inherent communication delays between Earth and Mars, catering to the nascent needs of burgeoning settlements. The vision extended beyond mere currency, encompassing smart contracts, supply chain management, and decentralized voting mechanisms tailored for Martian pioneers.

A Massive Community Donation

The highlight of the event was not just the presentation of the technology, but a demonstration of the community’s commitment to the cause. It was announced that a wide group of early Marscoin miners had pooled their coins together to make a monumental donation to further space exploration.

A total of 500,000 MARS was donated to The Mars Society, the leading advocate for the human exploration and settlement of Mars. A special digital wallet was created for this purpose, and its physical token was presented, symbolizing the alliance between blockchain innovators and space advocates.

Simultaneously, an identical 500,000 MARS donation was offered to the Mars One project, a team that had garnered significant public attention for its plans to establish a settlement on Mars. (Note: When Mars One later ceased operations, the community and organizers successfully facilitated the transfer of these funds to The Mars Society, consolidating a total of 1,000,000 MARS under their stewardship).

Building a Foundation

The successful presentation in New York City energized the early community. It demonstrated that Marscoin was not just a conceptual experiment, but a project backed by individuals willing to put their computational resources and digital assets toward a tangible, world-changing goal. The donations stand as a testament to the generosity and forward-thinking nature of the early Marscoin miners.
